IN SEPTEMBER, THE EXCELLENCE OF THE BEAUTY SECTOR IN SEPTEMBER, THE EXCELLENCE OF THE BEAUTY SECTOR

Due to the pandemic, many of the major international trade fairs will take place in the second half of 2021.

A further element of difficulty for companies and operators, who will have to extricate themselves in a labyrinthine calendar. In such a context, seeking synergies is essential. This is the spirit that has guided the organizers of Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna and MCB by Beauté Selection Paris, in search of a solution for operators and companies in the hair sector.
In September, insiders will be able to follow both events. MCB by BS will take place from 4 to 6 September in Paris Porte de Versaille, then from 10 to 13 September hairdressers and operators in the sector will be able to follow the 53rd edition of Cosmoprof in Bologna.

How important is it to work in synergy in this particular historical moment? We asked the two organizers - Enrico Zannini, General Manager BolognaFiere Cosmoprof, and Christophe Gabreau, CEO Standing Events, organizer of MCB by Beauté Sélection - for their comments.

For the first time, Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna and MCB will be held in September. Can you explain the reasons and circumstances that led to such a decision?

  • Enrico Zannini:
    "
Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna is a global event where all stakeholders from more than 150 countries meet every year to discover what's new for all cosmetics industry segments. To grant for a performing event, we decided to reschedule the show from 9 to 13 September. We listened to our exhibitors, associations, and institutions, which were worried about the pandemic's uncertainty: Cosmoprof needs better conditions to meet the great expectations of companies and attendees visiting Bologna from all over the world."
    Christophe Gabreau:
    "
With a last edition which set new records, attracting 50,000 visitors from more than 85 countries, 450 international brands from more than 40 countries on nearly 45,000 M2 of exhibition space, the MCB by BS Paris show constitutes each year in September an unmissable event and a prestigious showcase for companies in the sector to connect with the market and new customer segments, present and take stock of innovations and trends. After a year 2020 strongly affected by the global pandemic crisis, the year 2021 will be synonymous with meetings and new projects. The MCB by BS Paris returns from September 4 to 6, 2021, an ideal date for manufacturers and players in the sector to take advantage of the looming economic recovery. The prestige of this event in Paris, the world capital of creativity and innovation in the hairdressing and beauty sector, the program with French hairstyle trends with a strong international influence, and the best emerging talents from 5 continents, will be at this meeting place for the most influential companies and visitors eager for discussion and business".

Which was the impact of the pandemic on the hair industry in your country, and what do you expect from 2021?

  • Enrico Zannini:
"The pandemic has deeply affected the hair sector in Italy. During the first lockdown, hair salons were closed, with a substantial impact on both hairdressers and companies' economic balance. The change in consumers' habits, spending more time at home for the whole of 2020, led to a decrease in hair salons activity for the entire year. Recently, Cosmetica Italia, the Italian personal care association, published an analysis of the invoices in Italian hair salons from January to October 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. What emerges from the research is that there was a decrease of invoices (-31%). Customers reduced their visits to hair salons, and this had a strong impact on the 2020 income. Unfortunately, in the first weeks of 2021, hairdressers had to deal with restrictions. We are all waiting for a reduction of limitations in the country to move towards a recovery."
  • Christophe Gabreau:
"As of the reopening of hairdressing salons in May 2020, 60% of them recorded a drop in turnover over the period until the end of 2020, and 80% of them no longer recruited, according to the survey carried out by the National Union of Hairdressing Companies (UNEC), the leading French professional organization in the sector. The year 2020 has fundamentally reshaped the market with a sudden acceleration in trends. Consumers have changed their buying behavior and methods, and are now expressing new beauty needs and aspirations. This same year 2020 was an opportunity for consumers and clients of salons and institutes to refocus on the essentials and on what really matters in their lives for their beauty. The period was also animated, among professionals and industrialists in the sector, by new experiments and disruptive practices, and by an overhaul of distribution channels. The economic recovery expected from the second half of 2021 will be achieved by integrating these behavioral and service changes."

Can you anticipate some special initiatives of your 2021 editions?

  • Enrico Zannini:
"We aim to grant a performing business experience to all stakeholders attending the next edition of Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna. The exhibition will be the best stage where to discover what is the future of the beauty industry. Cosmoprof will be the restart for the sector, and we want our whole community to play an active role in creating a more inclusive show, where hairstylists and professionals can find suggestions and ideas to develop their business. Our companies will present the most inspiring launches and trends, and we will increase the number of live demos and exhibitions, with the most creative and innovative talents in the hair sector."
  • Christophe Gabreau:
"The MCB by BS organization is active in supporting the economy of the beauty industry, with accompanying actions towards the community of hairdressing and beauty professionals which has nearly 160,000 members around the world and 6,000 industrialists. The MCB by BS show will allow professionals to identify with these new needs and new aspirations, and prepare for the challenges of the future of beauty, in 2021 and beyond, in an increasingly competitive environment. An adapted qualifying content program, linking through qualified meetings during the MCB by BS Paris edition in September, and which will be found at the Beauté Sélection Lyon edition in November, will promote new business opportunities."
